Extremely Rare Glazed Redware Jar, Stamped "HEART & CROFT.," Chambersburg, PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and thick, semi-rounded rim, the exterior and interior surface covered in a reddish-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. This jar's maker's mark was used for a brief period circa 1870, in the wake of the death of J. M. Heart, who had succeeded his father, Jacob Heart, in the family potting business; it was continued at that time by J. M. Heart's widow, Kate Heart, and potter David Croft. Very nice condition with faint, minor line from rim, a small rim chip, other rim wear, some in-the-firing dryness to rim, and light surface wear to body of jar. H 7 1/2".
