Scarce Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Wheeling, WV Advertising, Beaver, PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "FROM / H.F. BEHRENS / CENTRE MARKET / GROCERY / Wheeling, W. Va.," applied over a slip-coated ground. Stenciled "2" above, flanked by small stenciled tulips. The vast majority of Behrens advertising stoneware was produced in Greensboro, Pennsylvania. This jar, with distinctive Beaver slip-coated surface and color, is the first Behrens piece from this other Western Pennsylvania pottery town that we have offered. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 9 3/4".
