Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to David Greenland Thompson, Morgantown, WV, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, angled rim, and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated at the shoulder with a looping vine between freehand stripes and hanging leaves below. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with three Thompson Pottery three-gallon capacity marks. Essentially as-made condition: a warped area to proper left side of jar; small bloated spots to surface; a 2 1/4" Y-shaped line to midsection, not visible on interior; a few small chips to interior of rim; a 1" area of light exfoliation to midsection on front; and very minor traces of old green paint to surface. H 13".
