Fine Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "Eagle Pottery." and "James Hamilton & Co. / Greensboro, Pa.," circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and grooved lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a flying eagle carrying an olive branch and arrows in its talons and a banner in its beak, inscribed "Eagle Pottery." James Hamilton maker's stenciling above and below. Freehand stripe and vining to upper body and a freehand stripe to base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A beautiful jar, featuring top-to-bottom cobalt application and the region's iconic stenciled eagle motif. Very nice condition with a chip to front end of proper left handle, a small in-the-firing iron ping to rim, old sticker residue to proper left side, and some staining. H 14".
