Minimum Bid: $3,000.

An estimate is an expected selling price for an item at auction. It is entirely possible for an item to sell for less or more than the given estimate.

Unlike almost every major auction house in the country, we handle our own shipping in-house. We understand how frustrating it can be to have to work with third-party shippers to have your objects delivered to you. Meanwhile, we also understand how important it is for you to receive your objects safely. We have over 40 years of experience safely packing antique ceramics. By default your invoice will include a shipping total via UPS Ground; you can also, of course, pick up objects at our gallery. Please feel free to contact us if you would like a quote. (A very few lots will have notes at the end of their descriptions letting you know that the object is too big or fragile for us to handle shipping ourselves.)

Exceedingly Rare Half-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Iron-Slip Inscription, "Waranted(sic) / Good," Stamped "CHANDLER MAKer," Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, featuring the iron slip slogan, "Waranted(sic) / Good," against a bluish-gray alkaline-glazed ground. Impressed with Thomas Chandler maker's mark above. Rare examples of Chandler stoneware bearing inscriptions such as "Waranted(sic) / Good" or simply "Waranted(sic)" were made to assure the public of the quality of his ware. A May 15, 1850 advertisement in the Edgefield Advertiser reads the following: "Stone Ware! / The Subscriber believing that a good article of this useful and necessary Ware is much needed, has come to the conclusion to make and keep on hand a splendid article, which he will not only recommend, by will warrant to be good. . . / T.M. CHANDLER." This jug's petite size, large inscription, and fine glaze, color, and condition, place it among the best surviving examples of Chandler stoneware bearing this prized inscription. Attesting to its rarity, this jug is the only example of Chandler stoneware bearing a full "Waranted Good" inscription that we have ever offered, having previously sold it in 2006. A second jug with restoration to the handle and spout, inscribed "Waranted / 2," was sold in our Spring 2021 Auction, lot 187. Exhibited/Illustrated: Swag & Tassel: The Innovative Stoneware of Thomas Chandler, McKissick Museum, August 6, 2018 - July 20, 2019, p. 78, pl. 85 of exhibition catalog. Provenance: Purchased by the Wards at Crocker Farm, Inc., May 20, 2006, lot 321. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 9".
