Exceedingly Rare Half-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Iron-Slip Inscription, "Waranted(sic) / Good," Stamped "CHANDLER MAKer," Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, featuring the iron slip slogan, "Waranted(sic) / Good," against a bluish-gray alkaline-glazed ground. Impressed with Thomas Chandler maker's mark above. Rare examples of Chandler stoneware bearing inscriptions such as "Waranted(sic) / Good" or simply "Waranted(sic)" were made to assure the public of the quality of his ware. A May 15, 1850 advertisement in the Edgefield Advertiser reads the following: "Stone Ware! / The Subscriber believing that a good article of this useful and necessary Ware is much needed, has come to the conclusion to make and keep on hand a splendid article, which he will not only recommend, by will warrant to be good. . . / T.M. CHANDLER." This jug's petite size, large inscription, and fine glaze, color, and condition, place it among the best surviving examples of Chandler stoneware bearing this prized inscription. Attesting to its rarity, this jug is the only example of Chandler stoneware bearing a full "Waranted Good" inscription that we have ever offered, having previously sold it in 2006. A second jug with restoration to the handle and spout, inscribed "Waranted / 2," was sold in our Spring 2021 Auction, lot 187.
