Extremely Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Stamped "CHANDLER / WARRANTED," Thomas Chandler Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, semi-ovoid jug with tooled spout, impressed at the shoulder with highly unusual "CHANDLER / WARRANTED" maker's mark, the surface covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze. Rare examples of Chandler stoneware bearing inscriptions such as "Waranted(sic) / Good" or simply "Waranted(sic)" were made to assure the public of the quality of his ware. A May 15, 1850 advertisement in the Edgefield Advertiser reads the following: "Stone Ware! / The Subscriber believing that a good article of this useful and necessary Ware is much needed, has come to the conclusion to make and keep on hand a splendid article, which he will not only recommend, by will warrant to be good. . . / T.M. CHANDLER." While the relatively small number of Chandler pieces inscribed "Waranted(sic) / Good" or "Waranted" feature the slogan applied in iron slip, this example is the first that we have offered using an impressed stamp. A 1 1/4" chipped section to reverse of spout. A small chip to lower molding on spout. An inverted T-shaped line to spout area. A minor base chip. Some light surface wear. H 12".
