Rare and Fine Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Crock with Iron Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER," Thomas Chandler, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, cylindrical form with curved tab handles and thin, semi-rounded rim, decorated on the front and reverse with looping and curved lines, applied in slip-trailed iron slip. Additional looping line designs below each handle. Gray-green alkaline-glazed exterior and bluish-gray alkaline-glazed interior. This crock includes a lesser-seen maker's mark, reading simply "CHANDLER" as opposed to the typical "CHANDLER MAKER," with rare placement of the stamp on the interior base. Scarce form featuring superb glaze and condition. Among the finest Chandler butter pot or cake crock forms that we have seen.
