Outstanding Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Bowl with Elaborate Iron Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to the Thomas Chandler and Reverend John Trapp Pottery, Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1848-1850, flaring bowl with semi-rounded rim, the interior base decorated with a large iron slip flower blossom with looping petals, surrounded by three large flowers with bullseye centers around the interior wall. Colorful bluish alkaline glaze to interior with heavier runs to interior rim. Exterior covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze with bluish runs. Exceptional form and outstanding decoration. The motifs surrounding the interior wall of the bowl are highly unusual in Chandler's work. Provenance: Purchased by the Wards from the owner of a North Carolina cabin approximately twenty years ago. Jon discovered the piece on the floor of the cabin, where it was being used as a dog bowl. Excellent condition with a 1" worn spot to exterior of rim and some light staining to interior. Diam. 11 1/4" ; H 4 3/4".
