Fine Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Inscribed "1872 / 2," Stamped "J. P BODIE, / MAKER," Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, SC, 1872, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and small, semi-rounded spout, the surface covered in a light-olive alkaline glaze with appealing bluish runs descending from the midsection and handle. Two large iron drips to proper right side of jug. Shoulder incised with 1872 date above a "2," denoting two gallons. Impressed below with Jesse P. Bodie maker's mark. Among the finest glazed Bodie jugs that we have seen. Excellent condition with a few minor base chips. Old newspaper residue to underside. **THIS LOT HAS THE FOLLOWING UPDATE ON ITS CONDITION: Some light scaling to clay on jug's proper right side, possibly in-the-firing. A short, faint diagonal surface line to left side of spout, not visible on interior and likely in-the-firing. H 12 3/4".
