Small-Sized Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, wide, cylindrical crock with squared rim and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a spotted tulip motif in John Bell's distinctive style, applied over slip-coated clay. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: Herb and Carol Hausmann Collection. A crack across underside, extending partway up front and reverse. A 1/2" hole in underside, with old tape covering it on interior. A 2 1/2" line from rim on reverse. A small in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder on reverse. A 1/2" surface line to proper right handle. Some in-the-firing spalling to cobalt. Old residue from use to interior of rim. Diam. 6 7/8" ; H 4 5/8".
