Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a floral spray, accented with spots. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Three small Y-shaped lines to proper left of decoration. A 3" Y-shaped line to proper right of decoration. A very minor 1" vertical line near base on front, not visible on interior. A thin 5" diagonal crack to rim on front. A short line to front of rim. A 3" hairline from rim on front. A 3" hairline from rim on reverse. Tight spider lines to surface on reverse. A salt drip at base on reverse. Small rim chips. Chipping to proper left handle. Staining to surface. H 13".
