Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed, crested birds perched on a forked branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Exfoliation to proper right side of crock's front. Half of base/underside broken in a single piece and reglued. Numerous small chips to interior of rim. Heavy water glass residue to interior. Staining and traces of old paint to exterior surface. H 11 3/8".
