Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a tree stump flanked by ground cover. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable decoration, rarely seen on a crock of this small size. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Excellent condition with a minor in-the-firing ping to proper left handle and light staining. H 7 5/8".
