Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Acorns-in-Branch Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG . PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with a branch bearing two acorns and three plume-like leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle. This finely-colored jug is the first example of Cowden & Wilcox stoneware that we have offered depicting acorns. Provenance: Herb and Carol Hausmann Collection. Chips to interior of spout. Minor chipping to exterior of spout. A short, horizontal surface-level crack to top of spout. A horizontal crack to handle, including a possibly reglued, small sliver of clay to surface of crack. Staining and light surface wear to body of jug. H 16".
