Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with an alternating design of four foliate motifs and four dashed, graduated blossoms, all conjoined at the stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Fine decoration and excellent color. Provenance: Herb and Carol Hausmann Collection. A 1 3/4" rim chip on proper left side of jar. A 5" crack from rim on proper left side of jar's front. A 9 3/4" crack from rim on reverse. Two small chips to proper left handle. Two small chips and wear to proper right handle. Small traces of old silver and greenish paint to surface. Some light wear to cobalt. Scattered small surface flakes. H 14".
