One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SIPE & SONS, / W'MSPORT, PA," circa 1885, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, pierced clay tabs, wood-and-wire bail handle, and applied handle at base on reverse, brush-decorated on the reverse with a stylized, wreath-like floral motif. Additional brushed decoration to base of spout. Cobalt highlights to pierced tabs, maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle at base on reverse. Provenance: Herb and Carol Hausmann Collection. A 6 3/4" crack on side of pail, continuing across underside, and further extending as a faint line into handle at base on reverse. A small chip to molding at base of rim. A shallow 3/4" chip and minor chip to one pierced tab. Some in-the-firing mottling to clay and minor staining. H 10".
