Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "M & T MILLER / NEWPORT, PA," circa 1870, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, profusely-decorated with a brushed design of a flowering tulip plant bearing three large blossoms interspersed with leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and lower handle terminal. A striking example of the Miller brothers' extravagant brushwork, exhibiting strong color and decorating the majority of the front of a large-sized jug. Very nice condition with a 1 3/4" in-the-firing contact mark to front edge of spout, a 7/8" in-the-firing contact mark to handle, a few chips to bottom edge of jug, some surface wear to jug, and a small area of fry to top of decoration. H 17 1/4".
