Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON, PA," circa 1875, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the reverse with a large brushed design of a man's face with long nose surrounded by a crescent-shaped foliate motif. Front of pail with large brushed wreath. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes tin lid and spout cover. The style of the man-in-the-moon design indicates it was executed by a potter/decorator previously employed by Cowden & Wilcox of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Featuring exceptional decoration, form, size, and color, this work is the finest example of Evan R. Jones stoneware that we have ever offered. Excellent condition with only minor flaws. A thin 2 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. A minor chip to handle on reverse. Minor flecks of bubbling to cobalt. Two very minor surface flakes on front. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder on front. H 10 3/4".
