Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON, PA," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a man's profile with long nose, surrounded by a crescent-shaped foliate motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. This crock's iconic design was executed by a decorator/potter previously employed further south at Cowden & Wilcox of Harrisburg. Relatively few Pittston examples of this decoration are known. Crisply-executed design with excellent size and color. Provenance: Recently surfaced in Eastern PA. Excellent condition with some water glass staining to interior and light staining to exterior. Exfoliation to Albany slip on interior base. H 9 1/4".
