Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG :PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with unusual squared spout, brush-decorated with the profile of a man's face with long nose and prominent chin within a curved bow of leaves with crossed tip. Handle with a horizontal hairline as well as a 3/8" glazed-over chip. Minor bubbling to cobalt on upper tip of decoration and some additional bubbling to cobalt at handle terminals. H 13".
