Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Dog Decoration, Stamped "J.A. & C.W. UNDERWOOD, / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1865-1867, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a dog with spotted body, flattened ears, and belligerent expression, seated on a stylized ground with shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Denlinger Auctions, Bennington, VT. Some fry to cobalt. A 3 1/2" flake to front of rim. A rim chip and a few minor rim nicks. Two small in-the-firing pings to proper right side of crock. Some staining to surface. H 11".
