Exceptional Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, N.Y.," circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a very large, brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird with ringed neck and paddle-shaped tail, perched on a flowering vine. Lavish cobalt brushwork fills the bird's body and leaves of the vine while intricate slip-trailing forms detail to the vine's two blossoms. Outstanding size to design, measuring 13 1/4" tall by 16" wide. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A top-to-bottom restored crack from rim on reverse, extending across underside. An additional unrestored 4" line on underside. Minor residue to surface. H 18".
