Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Decoration of a Fishing Heron, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON / UTICA, NY," circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a heron feeding from a grassy marsh flanked by trees. A highly unusual figural design with a wonderful folky quality. The first example featuring this decoration we have offered. Crack on underside, extending onto left side of front and curving onto shoulder to handle. This crack also continues from underside onto base area of reverse, and is professionally-colored on the front, side, and reverse. Some additional restoration to surface, primarily to rim and shoulder area, not affecting decoration. Some restoration to surface of handles. A rim chip and base chip.
