Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. MILLER, / WHEELING, VA," circa 1830, ovoid pitcher with short flaring collar, semi-squared rim, and tooled accents to the shoulder and collar, brush-decorated with a flowering plant bearing fan-shaped blossoms ascending the front. Impressed above with the maker's mark of Wheeling, Virginia, potter, John Miller, above a cobalt-highlighted two-gallon capacity mark. The finest example of John Miller stoneware that we have ever offered as well as the only pitcher. Very nice condition with only minor flaws. A shallow 7/8" chip to underside at edge. A tiny rim chip on reverse. Areas of light surface wear. A smooth in-the-firing contact mark to front. Some traces of old blue paint to interior and underside. H 14".
