Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "A & W BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO / PA," circa 1860, cylindrical jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a sweeping vine bearing three large tulips. Base with cobalt-script "5" flanked by wavy, diagonal strokes. Freehand stripe below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with A & W Boughner maker's mark. Very nice condition. An approximately 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" X-shaped surface line to shoulder on reverse, not visible on interior. A chip to interior of rim. H 15 3/8".
