Fine Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Decoration, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles; brush-decorated on the upper body with an undulating tulip vine, at the midsection with a second vine, and at the base with a script "3" flanked by wavy stripes. Two freehand stripes adorn the shoulder and two additional stripes separate the jar's three decorative motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent top-to-bottom decoration featuring superb color. Three chips to one handle. A small, shallow in-the-firing contact mark or chip to edge of opposite handle. Two small chips to shoulder molding on reverse. A thin 6 1/2" Y-shaped crack on underside, including one line continuing 3" up base on reverse. An approximately 2" x 1/2" inverted U-shaped surface crack to front of rim, which does not extend through to jar's interior. Minor surface wear and minor staining. H 13 1/2".
