Pair of Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Canning Jars, Incised "X," Catawba Valley, NC origin, circa 1850-1885, two semi-ovoid jars with flared rims and recessed inner rims designed to hold a lid, each incised with an X on the shoulder and covered in a mottled green alkaline glaze. Larger jar includes a second incised X on the reverse. Larger with a thin 2 3/4" crack on underside, extending 5 1/2" up body of jar. Other jar in excellent, essentially as-made condition. H (of taller) 8 7/8".
