Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Palatine, WV, origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with a cobalt-script 3 flanked by wavy stripes, above a horizontal fuchsia motif. Additional freehand stripes to shoulder, midsection, and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 1 1/2" flake to end of one handle. Wear to other terminals of handles. Water glass staining, primarily to reverse and interior. Minor surface wear. H 13 1/2".
