Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "KNOTTS, SWINDLER & CO / PALATINE, / W. VA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring arched Knotts, Swindler & Company maker's stenciling surrounding a stylized foliate motif. Stenciled "3" below. Freehand stripes below rim and at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One handle with an in-the-firing separation, two chips to one terminal, and a glazed-over chip to opposite terminal. Minor wear to ends of opposite handles. A small chip to shoulder molding. A long, vertical in-the-firing contact mark to right of stenciling. An in-the-firing surface chip to the "O" in "KNOTTS." A 2 1/2" flake to underside along bottom edge. H 13 3/8".
