Unusual One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a cluster of eight grapes hanging from a stem with two leaves and two looping tendrils. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes original salt-glazed lid. A difficult-to-find decoration for this size of vessel. A small drilled lamp wire hole in underside. A 1 1/8" hairline to rim on front. A 1 1/4" hairline above one handle. A rim chip on reverse. A few other minor rim chips. A few minor chips to inner rim for lid. A 3/4" flake to one handle, including a 1 1/4" hairline extending through it. A minor base chip, possibly in-the-firing. A 1/2" line at base, not visible on interior. Lid with a 2" hairline from edge and two edge chips. H 9 1/4".
