Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate X-Shaped Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large X-shaped foliate design emanating from a circular flower blossom or small piece of fruit. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Desirable size and bold decoration, featuring outstanding coverage of the design over the vessel's front. Excellent condition with two small chips to one handle and a minor nick to opposite handle. H 9 1/2".
