Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "RICHEY & HAMILTON / PALATINE. / W. VA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring Richey & Hamilton maker's stenciling flanked by stenciled tulips, surrounding a stenciled 6. Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 3 1/2" hairline on underside, extending approximately 8" up side of jar. An in-the-firing 2 1/2" horizontal crack running along interior of rim, with chipping and two short surface lines to interior. This damage includes a thin 8" crack from rim. Additionally, a 1 1/4" surface line from rim on interior. A small in-the-firing chip to underside at edge. H 16 1/4".
