Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "D.P. SHENFELDER / READING, PA," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with applied lug handles and tooled shoulder and rim, brush-decorated with a undulating vine bearing three flower blossoms and graduated leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Very nice condition. A thin 3" crack on underside, extending 5" up right side of front. A chip and minor nick to interior of rim, a small in-the-firing iron ping to interior, and water glass staining to interior. Right handle with a 1 3/4" horizontal hairline and tiny nick along its edge. H 9" ; Diam. 12 1/2".
