Extremely Rare Stoneware Bank with Elaborate Cobalt Floral and Spot Decoration, Inscribed "NJ," New Jersey origin, circa 1835, ovoid bank with footed base, tooled shoulder, and distinctive finial, brush-decorated around the body with four tulip motifs. Inscribed "NJ" to shoulder. Carved vertical slot flanked by dashes. Dash and spot decorations around shoulder and finial. Cobalt-decorated stoneware banks from the state of New Jersey are exceptionally rare. This example is the only bank featuring this state's name in cobalt that we have seen. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor from Axelband Antiques in February 1984. Excellent condition with minor wear to slot. H 4 3/8".
