Exceptional Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, circa 1775, ovoid jar with narrow mouth, applied vertical handles, and cobalt banding to shoulder and base, decorated on each side with a bold cobalt "watch spring" motif. Additional watch springs emanating from the lower handle terminals. Outstanding form, strong decoration, and excellent color. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a forty-year private collection. A large hole in underside, partially-covered by a reglued section. Significant exfoliation to base, extending toward shoulder on one side. Two minor surface flakes to shoulder on opposite side. Light wear to interior of rim. H 10".
