One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS," Thomas Commeraw, Corlears Hook, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base, heavily-tooled spout, and ribbed handle, decorated with Commeraw's classic swag-and-tassel motif resembling a clamshell, highlighted in cobalt slip. Impressed below with the maker's mark of African-American Lower East Side potter, Thomas Commeraw. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Provenance: From a forty-year private collection. Large, smooth in-the-firing contact marks to surface. Some shallow chipping to base, some of which is glazed over. Three small chips to spout tooling. Old rubber stopper in spout from when jug was once used as a lamp.
