Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Purple Slip Decoration, probably Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, circa 1800, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied loop handles, decorated in purplish slip on the front and reverse with a stylized flower, accented with spots. Purplish slip highlights to handle terminals. The unusual color of this jar's slip decoration, occasionally found on early Manhattan stoneware, is likely a mixture of cobalt oxide and manganese dioxide. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a forty-year private collection. Rim chips. Surface crazing to much of jar, not visible on interior. A thin crack to base area, partially visible on interior, which becomes a long, thin spider line that cannot be seen on the interior. Light surface wear. Small, shallow chips to base.
