Scarce Ovoid Stoneware Jug with Large Incised Bird Decoration, attributed to Nicholas Van Wickle, Old Bridge, NJ, circa 1825, approximately three-gallon ovoid jug with heavily-tooled shoulder and semi-squared rim, the front decorated with a large, deeply-incised bird perched in a leafy branch. Light spotted cobalt decoration to body of bird, cobalt ring to bird's neck, and cobalt highlights to incised branch. Eye composed of an impressed screw head. Impressive, large-sized figural decoration. Attribution based on sherds with similar incised bird decorations, excavated by Robert J. Sim at the Morgan / Van Wickle site in Old Bridge, NJ, and now in the collection of the Monmouth County Historical Society, Freehold, NJ. Provenance: Sold at the Stella Fascinski Sale, East Keansburg, NJ; Ex-Warren Hartmann. Tight surface line on underside. Three very minor spout nicks. Minor base wear. H 14 3/4".
