Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Dish, Inscribed "Staufer / & Shank," Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, flare-rimmed dish with footed base and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with inverted swag motifs and small vertical dashes of cobalt. Underside incised with the inscription, "Staufer / & Shank," two itinerant potters associated with the John Bell shop. A small number of surviving stoneware and redware pieces bear this inscription, the initials "S + S," or "Shank." Exceptional form and rare inscription. One of only two examples of its kind that we have seen. A related work was sold in Crocker Farm's May 20, 2006 auction, lot 213. Provenance: From an eighty-plus year private collection. Excellent condition with a small rim chip and two small chips to foot. H 1 5/8" ; Diam. 4 3/4".
