Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Chicken Waterer, Stamped "THOS. HAIG / 975 N. 2ND. ST. / PHILA.," Philadelphia, PA origin, circa 1875, large-sized, dome-shaped form with applied water trough, button-shaped finial, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a tall flowering plant bearing six blossoms. Base of front with large leaf motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a wavy line of cobalt below each handle. Decoration is applied over a Bristol-slip-glazed surface. Albany-slip-glazed interior. Cobalt-highlighted Haig maker's mark at base on reverse. Impressed "3" at shoulder. A large area of restoration to hood of trough. A restored top-to-bottom crack from base on reverse. Some restoration to handles. Unrestored chips to finial. Two small base chips on reverse and a small in-the-firing ping to base of trough. A 3 3/4" and a 1 7/8" vertical line where trough meets body of waterer. A 2" vertical line at base on reverse. A H 15 1/4".
