Scarce Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Flowering Urn Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed floral spray emanating from an open-handled, pedestal-based urn. Unusual hollyhock or trumpet flower on left and right sides of design. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Extensive exfoliation to reverse and sides. Lesser exfoliation to lower portion of churn on front. A tight X-shaped crack to left of decoration. A small iron ping near base on front. Extensive cracks to reverse, including a crack ending below right handle. An additional small Y-shaped line below right handle. Chips to inner rim for lid. A 4" inverted Y-shaped surface line to interior and rim and a 1 1/2" vertical surface line to interior rim area. A minor rim chip. Some light wear to cobalt. Light staining. H 19 1/4".
