One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Lidded Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a daisy emanating from a curved stem, accented with flourishes and spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes fitting salt-glazed stoneware lid. Jar with a thin Y-shaped crack to underside, part of which continues 3 1/2" diagonally on front. A small rim chip on reverse. A small in-the-firing chip to interior of rim. Minor nicks to inner rim for lid. Lid with edge chips, a shallow chip to knob, and five hairlines from edge. A spot of light staining. A few in-the-firing contact marks to surface. H (excluding lid) 10 1/2".
