Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Cornucopia Decoration, Stamped "J. &. E. NORTON. / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, ovoid jug with flared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of scroll-tipped cornucopia brimming with leaves, a detailed flower, and looping trail. Cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. One of two Norton cornucopia-decorated pieces that we have ever offered. Some light wear to cobalt. Two small, in-the-firing iron pings to front. A series of tight horizontal fissures, which occurred in the firing, to base area on reverse, some extending partway onto base of front. A salt drip on reverse. A 5 1/4" hairline descending from side of spout to an area to the right of the decoration. H 13".
