Rare Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Turtle Creek, PA Advertising, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, brush-decorated with an undulating, flowering vine above the stenciled advertising, "J.M. LARIMER. / DEALER / IN DRY GOODS, GROCERIES / & c. / Turtle Creek / PA." Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Base with freehand "5" flanked by dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A good example of Western Pennsylvania brushwork combined with rare advertising. Wear to surface on front. Staining to exterior and interior. A tiny chip to underside of rim on front. H 16".
