NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with a very large and elaborate slip-trailed design of a flowering plant. The motif features an oversized central blossom with striped and swag-decorated interior surrounded by spots, flanked by two smaller blossoms. The three stems leading to each flower include delicate, spade-shaped leaves and terminate into a cluster of graduated leaves, decorated with striped and spotted interiors. Among the finer Norton floral decorations that we have offered, featuring elements not typically associated with this pottery. A 1 1/4", in-the-firing iron ping / chip to top of spout. Two small spout chips. A salt drip to spout and midsection on front. Some minor surface wear, including a tiny flake to shoulder on front and a small flake to right side of jug's front. A 2 1/4" in-the-firing contact mark to reverse. Small in-the-firing iron pings to surface. Areas of small spotted staining to surface. Two base chips. In-the-firing horizontal surface lines at base.
