Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "from j. littell / Greensboro. Pa," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with incised banding to upper body, tooled shoulder and rounded rim, the front lavishly-decorated with freehand stripes and vining along with a bold-faced "2" flanked by vining at the base. Johnson Littell maker's stenciling at midsection. Signed examples of Littell's stoneware are scarce. This work, combining extravagant brushwork, crisp stenciling, and excellent color, is easily one of the finest-decorated examples of Littell stoneware that we have ever offered. Two large adjacent reglue sections on side/reverse, together measuring 6 1/2" tall and 7 1/4" wide. Two additional long diagonal cracks on front, descending from rim and ending near base. A few chips to interior of rim. Minor chipping along juncture of reglued sections. H 11 3/8".
