Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "from j. littell / Greensboro. Pa," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with incised banding to upper body, tooled shoulder and rounded rim, the front lavishly-decorated with freehand stripes and vining along with a bold-faced "2" flanked by vining at the base. This work, combining extravagant brushwork, crisp stenciling, and excellent color, is easily one of the finest-decorated examples of Littell stoneware that we have ever offered. A few chips to interior of rim. Minor chipping along juncture of reglued sections. H 11 3/8".
