Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and tapered spout molding, decorated with an unusual slip-trailed floral design resembling a rose. Striped details to petals and accents to leaves. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced PA collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. Excellent condition with minor surface wear, a minor chip and tiny nick to handle, and a few minuscule base nicks. H 11 3/4".
