Three-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the Brown Family, Alleghany or Henrico County, VA, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and two open handles at the shoulder, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with two flower buds emanating from leafy stems. Appealing form. Provenance: Estate of author and historian, Nancy Shedd, Petersburg, PA; purchased by Shedd at Kinzle Sale Management Service, American Stoneware Pottery III, 1979, lot 39. Tight cracks on underside, extending onto base area, including a 5" Y-shaped crack at base. A large star-shaped spider line below one handle, extending onto shoulder of one decorated side. H 14 3/4".
