Very Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "IRELAND / DUEY / & / SHINNICK / MT. CRAWFORD / VA.," circa 1875, ovoid pitcher with flared collar and tooled rim, decorated around the body and collar with a series of swags and hanging flowers. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Distinctive raised-face capacity mark to collar. Impressed below with rare "IRELAND / DUEY / & / SHINNICK" and "MT. CRAWFORD / VA." stamps with highly unusual side-by-side orientation. Excellent form, decoration, and color. One of a few signed Mt. Crawford, Virginia stoneware pitchers known. Provenance: Recently surfaced in Pennsylvania. A sealed Y-shaped crack to underside, forming a long inverted J-shaped crack on front, which is also sealed. A 5/8" chip to side of spout. A tiny nick to spout. A 5/8" chip to underside at edge and other minor, in-the-firing chipping to base. A horizontal hairline through handle including a small chip. H 11 3/4".
