Scarce Four-Gallon Pittsburgh, PA Stoneware Advertising Jar with Elaborate Stenciled Rose Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with four stenciled rose motifs surrounding the advertising, "John Appel, / GROCER. / WEST / Pittsburgh." Base with stenciled "4," flanked by two rare, stenciled man-in-the-moon motifs. Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. An F-shaped crack on underside, forming a long horizontal crack at base, extending from left side of jar onto reverse. A 7 1/2" vertical crack to side of jar below one handle. A 4 1/2" Y-shaped surface line to midsection on reverse, not visible on interior. A 1 1/8" chip to handle. A small chip to interior of rim. Minor staining and minor surface wear. H 15".
